The Persian, probably the most well-known and easily recognized cat breed, is available in a wide range of colors and patterns. Our Persians are Himalayan Persians.
The Himalayan Persian Breed began in the 1930's when cat breeders wanted to merge the body type of the Persians with the striking colourpoint marking of the Siamese breed. This breed was accepted by the GCCF in 1957 as the 'Colourpoint Longhair' Our Himalayan Persians have the stock body type, with long hair and a placid temper. Himalayans are docile, gentle cats, though they do enjoy play. Their coats are long, luxuriant, and mat easily. Daily grooming is required to keep their coats free of painful mats. Credit for the Persian
breed is generally given to Turkey, Iran (formerly Persia), and the
neighboring countries. Longhaired cats were associated with these
countries from about the 16th century, and possibly earlier. During
that period the first cats of this kind began to arrive in Europe.
It is assumed that the long coat arose from a mutation in shorthaired
cats that maybe were of Egyptian origin. The colder climates of Turkey
and Iran certainly favored such a mutation. The long coat aroused
great interest among cat owners and made the cats more valuable. |
